2013 ICS Award Nominees

THE MASTER, HOLY MOTORS DOMINATE ICS AWARD NOMINEES

Honoring films released in the USA in 2012.

What a superb year for film, both in Hollywood and internationally. The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson’s translucent saga of cult perfectionism vs. deeply imperfect humanity, led the International Cinephile Society Awards this year with 10 nominations. Next came Holy Motors, a glimpse into the surreal soul of filmmaker Leos Carax and his alter ego, Oscar (Denis Lavant serving up a moving feast of multiple identities), with 9 nods. Also featuring prominently on our ballots were Moonrise Kingdom, Tabu, Amour, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, and Zero Dark Thirty, each with 5 or more mentions.

In a strong year for studio films, the little guys still managed to pull off some unexpected lone-actor nods: Matthias Schoenaerts for Bullhead, Greta Gerwig for Damsels in Distress, Nina Hoss for Barbara, Rosemarie DeWitt for Your Sister’s Sister, Jun-Sang Yu for In Another Country… and perhaps not so surprising, Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy. Meanwhile, this year’s tremendous depth of field in the director race produced a rare dichotomy, as not a single one of our directing nominees matched the Oscar lineup. There were 66 films mentioned in the Best Unreleased Film category, and since 20 of these got passionate support we want to highlight them all for priority viewing in 2013.

Winners of the 10th ICS Awards will be announced on February 11, 2013.
