Stranger by the Lake and Mommy Lead 2015 ICS Award Nominees
Honoring films released in the USA in 2014.
Two French-language films led a diverse pack of nominees for this year’s International Cinephile Society Awards. Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake, a meditation on risk and lust wrapped up as a sun-and-shadow-drenched Hitchcockian thriller, came away with 9 nominations. Close behind with 8 nods was Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, in which three people confront their damage in tightly claustrophobic frames, their love and rage barely confined to the screen.
Also in the running, period romp The Grand Budapest Hotel and moody alien seduction Under the Skin each scored 7 nods, while Richard Linklater’s ambitious project Boyhood, filming a child’s life for a few weeks each year from ages 6-18, received 6 nominations.
Surprisingly, several actresses were double-nominated this year: Marion Cotillard twice in lead for lush melodrama The Immigrant and also for the realist social drama Two Days, One Night; Julianne Moore in lead as Alzheimer’s patient Still Alice and in supporting for David Cronenberg’s scathing Hollywood satire Maps to the Stars; and finally Tilda Swinton in lead for her wise-and-wonderful vampire, Eve, in Only Lovers Left Alive and in supporting as Minister Mason from the futurist cautionary tale Snowpiercer.
Besides Guiraudie, Dolan, and Linklater, the director nominees included legend Jean-Luc Godard for his insanely experimental Goodbye to Language and the multi-talented Jonathan Glazer for Under the Skin. In keeping with ICS tradition, the Unreleased Films list features 15 underseen films that our members were lucky enough to catch at festivals on five continents, and for which they voted passionately, but which failed to receive theatrical distribution in the USA in 2014. We look forward to seeing some of these titles in our awards next year.
Winners of the 12th ICS Awards will be announced on February 20, 2015.
