65 Films Vie for Best Foreign Film Oscar

The October 1st deadline has passed and the list of films able to compete for the Best Foreign Film Oscar is in. From these films committees whittle the list down to nine, with a second round of voting giving us the magic five that will actually vie for the Oscar. Chile, Costa Rica and Slovenia have all entered despite never being nominated before. Heavyweights France, Germany and Italy are always frontrunners here with France (Of Gods and Men, a winner at Cannes this year) the most likely to end up in the final five. Last year’s winner, Argentina (The Secret In Their Eyes) has submitted Carancho, and Cannes Palme d’Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives from director Apichatpong Weerasethakul could be a dark horse and give Thailand its first win here.
